BET/MTV Study now Complete.  See the Shocking Results!!!"

The Parents Television Council™, in partnership with the Enough is Enough Campaign, released shocking new data about BET and MTV daytime music video programming.  As recently as March 2008, children who watched BET’s Rap City and 106 & Park and MTV’s Sucker Free on MTV were bombarded with adult content - sexual, violent, profane or obscene - once every 38 seconds.

Statement of Timothy F. Winter, President of the Parents Television Council delivered on April 10, 2008 at the National Press Club.

Message to PROCTOR & GAMBLE: "You Can't Have It Both Ways"

Proctor & Gamble has a campaign called, "My Black Is Beautiful." According to the website (www.myblackisbeautiful.com, and http://myblackisbeautiful.com/MBIB_Discussion_Guide.pdf), the campaign is about affirming the inner and outer beauty of black women.  It seeks to affirm the young black girls who "are at risk of allowing the negative images of Black women in media and entertainment to define their standard of beauty," and "to affect positive change in the way Black women are reflected in the popular culture."

This sounds good, and it is good.  The problem is that Proctor & Gamble is one of the largest, if not the largest corporate sponsor of music video programs on Black Entertainment Television; video programs that sexually objectify women, portray black men as pimps and gangsters, and promote ideas that are antithetical to this "My Black Is Beautiful."  And then on top of that, Proctor & Gamble recently announced that it is forming a record company with Island Def Jam Music Group, called TAG Records, and the President will be Jermaine Dupri, one of the leading music rap music producers.  The purpose of this new record company (here's the link), according to Dupri, is to use rap artists to promote Proctor & Gamble products. What BET SAYS VS What BET DOES!

We believe Black Entertainment Television says one thing, but they do another.

The following is a sample of some of the messages currently being aired on video programs (mainly 106 & Park, BET NOW & Rap City) marketed to children and youth from 11 am - 7:30 pm Monday-Friday.

Here's what BET says.

In a letter to our campaign, Debra Lee, CEO of Black Entertainment Television said the following about the networks programming guidelines...:

  • BET does not air programming that endorses or condones illegal drugs or gratuitious violence;
  • we have a list of words that are fordbidden on our channel;
  • And we do not air music videos that contain graphic or excessive sexual activity or violence. We work with the music labels and artists to edit music videos where appropriate.

(Here's the letter in it's entirety.)

$ Advertisers of Concern $

We have documented the following companies whose commercials air during BET's video programs. The advertising dollars of these companies are sponsoring programming that glorifies violence, criminal activity, drug use/drug dealing, the objectification of women, and portrayal of black and latino men as pimps, gangsters, and thugs.

The following companies' ads were shown during Rap City and 106 & Park on February 25:
