Message to PROCTOR & GAMBLE: "You Can't Have It Both Ways" (cont'd from hompage)
Here's the issue: It seems as if Proctor & Gamble is trying to have it both ways. It says it's against negative images of black women in the media and entertainment industry, but it is the leading corporate sponsor of video programs that degrade black women, and now they are forming a record company with music producers and artists that do the same thing.
Proctor & Gamble's "My Black Is Beautiful" campaign which seeks to challenge the negative
images of women in the media and entertainment industry and, yet (according to the PTC study) P&G is one of the largest, if not the largest, corporate sponsors of music video programs that promote unhealthy, negative, and offensive images to young girls. On top of that they are forming a record company that will provide a stage for rappers who will promote P&G products, and it is not clear that these artists will promote positive images of black women. They are trying to have it both ways.
If P&G is really concerned about negative images of black women in the media and entertainment industry, it would not continue to fund, sponsor, and subsidize this content.
We urge P&G to do the following:
1) Become aware of the kinds of messages their corporate advertising dollars are sponsoring. According to "The Rap on Rap" study (click here for study), P&G is sponsoring music video content on Black Entertainment Television that degrades women, sexually objectifies women, and portrays black men as pimps, gangsters, and thugs.
2) Remove all advertising dollars from music video programs that contain material that degrades women, promotes violence and criminal activity, and protrays black men as pimps, gangsters, and thugs. This then includes programs such as, 106 & Park, Rap City, BET Now, and SuckerFree Countdown.
3) Establish content standards for the new TAG Records music label affirms the spirit of the "My Black Is Beautiful" campaign.
Call to action for those concerned about P&G's sponsorship of these programs!! |
Contact (via phone, fax, or email) P&G to let them know that they are outraged that they are using their corporate advertising dollars to support such offensive programming to today's youth.
